Safe and Brave Spaces Network<\/b><\/h4>\n

Lead by Love brings you a new network initiative.\u00a0 We need to have safe spaces for vulnerable people to congregate, but we also need brave spaces in order to have those challenging conversations about the diverse peoples that make up humanity.<\/span><\/h4>\n

We affirm everyone\u2019s right to be human, and to identify as they choose, and not involuntarily be labelled by others.\u00a0 If you\u2019re ready to identify with or be an ally to vulnerable groups, then our network is for you.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Lead by Love \u2013 because there is no mandate for hate!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

What Is A \u2018Brave Space\u2019?<\/b><\/h4>\n
    \n
  • A brave space is a supportive place where participants feel comfortable learning, sharing honestly and equally, and growing individually and together.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • A brave space is inclusive of all races, sexes, genders, abilities, immigration statuses, languages, and lived experiences.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Brave spaces can help encourage dialogue, especially about challenging topics like anti-racism.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    While \u201cpsychological safety\u201d and \u201csafe spaces\u201d are trending terms, many people will equate these with <\/span>comfort<\/span><\/i>. In a psychologically safe place, participants already have the capacity to interact openly and without the fear of judgment or punishment.<\/span><\/p>\n

    But conversations surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion are not always comfortable, nor should they be if we are truly challenging ourselves to grow in our worldviews.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Principles To Facilitate Brave Spaces<\/b><\/h4>\n
      \n
    • We are <\/span>present<\/b> in the room and with each other (virtual or in-person).<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We are <\/span>open<\/b> to new ideas, ways of thinking, and feedback.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We <\/span>listen deeply<\/b> and seek new knowledges and understanding<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We are <\/span>curious<\/b> and hold a willingness to have our minds changed.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We bring <\/span>awareness<\/b> to our biases, assumptions, and judgements.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We hold a space of <\/span>trust<\/b> and <\/span>confidentiality<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We focus on <\/span>possibility<\/b> and see obstacles as opportunities for learning.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We <\/span>acknowledge<\/b> and <\/span>appreciate<\/b> each others\u2019 gifts, strengths, and contributions.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We hold <\/span>brave space<\/b> for <\/span>courageous<\/b> conversations.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We challenge <\/span>ideas<\/b>, not people.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We allow <\/span>discomfort<\/b> to lead our <\/span>growth<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We take <\/span>accountability<\/b> for our own learning (Knowledge Mobilization vs. Knowledge Extraction)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • We create space for <\/span>multiple truths<\/b>.<\/span>\n

      • People have different experiences of how things happen. This doesn\u2019t mean there is a right or wrong answer. Instead of \u2018this or that\u2019, we\u2019ll try \u2018this and that\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Speak your truth, and seek understanding of other truths that may differ from your experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • We acknowledge our <\/span>special relationship with the environment<\/b> around us.<\/span>\n
          \n
        • We live amongst the sacred mountains of the Bow Valley and acknowledge the deep histories of the lands where we live, work, and play.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Safe vs. Brave Spaces<\/b><\/p>\n

          While both “safe spaces” and “brave spaces” aim to foster inclusive environments, “safe spaces” prioritize emotional comfort and protection from harm, while “brave spaces” encourage challenging conversations and stepping outside of comfort zones to engage with diverse perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Safe Spaces:<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Focus:<\/b>
            \n<\/b>Creating an environment where individuals feel physically and emotionally secure, free from judgment, harassment, and discrimination.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Goal:<\/b>
            \n<\/b>To foster a sense of belonging and comfort, allowing individuals to express themselves without fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Examples:<\/b>
            \n<\/b>Affinity groups, spaces specifically set aside for marginalized or minoritized identities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Potential Drawbacks:<\/b>
            \n<\/b>Can sometimes stifle honest dialogue and critical thinking if the focus is solely on avoiding discomfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Brave Spaces:<\/span><\/p>\n

            • Focus:<\/b>
              \n<\/b>Encouraging individuals to speak up, share their perspectives, confront biases, and engage in constructive dialogue, even when it might be uncomfortable or challenging.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Goal:<\/b>
              \n<\/b>To promote learning and growth through engaging with diverse perspectives and challenging assumptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Examples:<\/b>
              \n<\/b>Classrooms, lecture halls, public forums where the search for knowledge is paramount, even if some discussions may make certain students uncomfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Potential Drawbacks:<\/b>
              \n<\/b>Can be intimidating for some individuals if they don’t feel prepared to engage in challenging conversations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
